The annual Inter Firms took place in the club during the month of May with the finals taking place on Sunday 17th May, 2009. This year the event was kindly sponsored by Mulligans Pharmacy & Specsavers Waterford. There were 141 teams entered with a total of 564 participants (not including subs!!) actually playing. During the course of the two weeks we were very lucky to have avoided any heavy rain which meant that all matches were able to be played on schedule. It was capped off with some fabulous sunny weather on finals day. The Inter Firms is renowned for not just being a tennis competition, it is also a great social occasion where beginners as well as seasoned veterans can get out on the courts, have a game of tennis and then relax afterwards in the bar over some good food, drink and entertainment. Thanks also to Michael and all the bar staff for all the late hours; to Margaret McGarth for the excellent food she provided over the two weeks, it was one of the highlights and many commented that it was what made the tournament for them; to those companies who very generously sponsored the entertainment events, The Pantry, Ardkeen Quality Food Store, Guildhall Construction and DHB Architects; and to all the many, many members who helped out on the desk downstairs and in the kitchen upstairs, many thanks and well done to all!
Congratulations are due to all the winners, runners-up and all the teams who played. Unfortunately there can only be one winner however thanks are due to everyone for making the competition so much fun. As usual these competitions would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors. Munster Branch Winter League Finals Sunday 5th April 2009
Congratulations to our Grade 3 Team who reached the finals on the Munster Branch Winter League. The final score was 3-2 to their opponents Carrigaline and it was a very close match. It was held in Sundays Well in Cork. They played exceptionally well with no easy points at all. Every point had to be won.
Final scores were:
Padraig Walsh won his singles 6-1, 7-5
Michelle Kirby won her singles 4-6,6-4, 6-2
Stan Leslie and Patty Briggs lost the mixed 6-3, 6-3
Stan Leslie and Padraig Walsh lost the mens 6-4, 7-6
Michelle Kirby and Patty Briggs lost the ladies 6-4, 7-6
