Inter Firms Tennis Time

Enjoy it but how can I enjoy it when I dont really play the game or feel Im out of my league playing against whomever of this region.

Enjoy it after all its only a bit of fun. Its the others that are ultra competitive, as for me I just want to win. Do my best. Impress my partner. Or the boss.

One of the most used sayings in tennis coaching is look at the ball. Look at it, what a load of rubbish, it should read hit the ball in order to hit you really really have to look at it, judge it, move to or from your location in order to hit it and dont be afraid to hit it. After all, the ball can only react to your hit so hit it as wisely as possible in those milliseconds you are in charge of it.

When hitting that fuzzy yellow ball that flies past you remember to stay in the present, the here and now. Dont be trying to impress that good looking person on the court next to you they dont even see you as they are focused on their own game. Focus on your own game and play the score. The score, what is the score? I dont know. If you dont know the score you cant play your best tactical tennis game. If you are up go for it, if you are down dont hit it into that net that seems to be everywhere and getting bigger and larger but just on your side. The others never hit it there.

If you do hit it into the net or out too often learn from that mistake. As my old tennis buddy Albert Einstein once said
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new
so adjust, lift, soften the next shot so you get a different result and you are now imposing your game on those on the far side.

I will end now but I will leave you with one wish that you remember for as long as a gold fish does which is 7 seconds most rallys are well over by 7 seconds but you could and might spend hours dwelling on a point, a call, an error that you hit in the first game, leading to a loss a loss that should never have happened and now you are at home on Finals Day and those pluggers are lifting the cup all because you didn’t go out to enjoy your game.

All the best,

Willie Guiry

Munster Branch Winter League Grade 4 Finalists 2012

Congrats to our grade 4 team who were narrowly beaten in the Munster Branch Winter League Finals on Sunday 1st April. The matches were all tied going into the mixed doubles matches. The team were very close in going to a super doubles but it was not to be…. Great tennis was played by all and they definitely kept the supporters on the edge of their seats.
Many thanks to all the supporters who braved the early start and came on the bus to cheer on the team.
Well done to Sheena Leslie, Maria Roche, Paul Phelan and Tony Whelan. Super subs, Trish Whelan and Aidan Hackett.

SPIN

In a recent article, I spoke about the 5 controls you have at your disposal to control every shot you hit.

The 5 Controls were Direction, Depth, Height, Speed and Spin.

Firstly I will talk about Spin. There are basically 3 types of spin that you can impart on a ball when you contact it.

  • The First type is Topspin,
  • The Second type is underspin or slice,
  • The Third type is sidespin, where the ball moves left to right or right to left.

Now it is necessary to mention about the P.A.S.S Principle. These are the factors that you can use to alter each and every one of your strokes.

  • P     Pathway the racket takes,
  • A    Angle of the racket face,
  • S     Speed of the racket head on contact,
  • S     Spin that the racket can impart on contact.

P…the pathway the racket takes as it arrives at the ball will affect the potential spin which can be generated. If the racket arrives having travelled a very steep approach (be it in an upwards or downwards direction) the potential for spin is great. If it arrives on a flat approach the potential for spin is minimal.

A…the angle your racket face takes as it arrives into contact will also affect the potential for spin. Simply by opening or closing the face of the racket will increase or decrease the ball spin rate.

S…the speed that the racket head arrives at contact will influence the rate of rotation of the ball. A fast racket head speed will generate more spin giving you more control of the ball.

S…the amount of spin required for each shot will depend on a number of factors e.g. Firstly your court location – ie behind the baseline or hitting a smash close to the net. Secondly the contact height of the ball – ie high contact may require less spin or a low contact may require more spin.

Next time you are out practising your shots, try altering each or any of these governing principles or simply ask any of us tennis coaches.

Yours in sport

William Guiry
